Obituary of Sonia Seaton

It is with immense sadness that the Lewis, Layne and Seaton families announce the passing of Mrs Sonia Geraldine Seaton, 66, of Vaughan, Ontario, who passed away on May 14, 2024 after an almost 2 year battle with glioblastoma (brain tumor).

Sonia was born on January 23, 1958 to the late Enos and Ina Lewis of Troumaca village on the beautiful island of St Vincent & the Grenadines. Sonia loved her community of Troumaca and remained connected to her roots there up until her last visit in December 2023. She received her formal education at the Troumaca Government School and then went on to complete her secondary studies at the Emmanuel High School in Kingstown. Upon completion of high school , she returned as a teacher to the Troumaca primary and secondary school respectively. Sonia pursued post- secondary studies at George Brown College and York University in Toronto.

Sonia migrated to Canada in 1980 and two years later gave birth to her eldest son , Kellon.  She married the late Fitz Gerald “Speed” Layne in 1989 and that union produced two children: Kelisha and Kelrie. Sonia was also a mother figure to Fitz’s other 8 children. She was a loving and devoted wife to Fitz up until his passing in October, 2012. 4 years years after Fitz’s passing, Sonia reconnected with a teenage friend , Wilmoth Seaton, and they were married in 2017.  Their love for each other, community, travel and their faith were the pillars of their marriage.

Sonia’s career was in the field of social work . She worked for over thirty years  at Sancta Maria House, Toronto, a non-profit Catholic/Christian long-stay supportive recovery home for young women. She functioned as the Executive Director during the years leading up to retirement. Her career allowed her to impact the lives of many young women across the GTA. She was a staunch mental health advocate.

Sonia was a woman of devout and unwavering faith.  She was an exemplary mother, devoted wife, loving sister, cherished aunt. She brought joy and light to every room she entered and made an indelible impact on many. She epitomized the best of qualities:  integrity, humility, selflessness, unconditional love, kindness, strength of spirit, and an unending generosity that could be seen in her care for her family and loved ones.

Sonia was preceded in death by her parents Enos and Ina Lewis and her first husband Fitz Gerald Layne. She is survived by her husband Wilmoth Seaton; her children, Kellon, Kelisha and Kelrie. 8 stepchildren, 3 grandchildren: Chakeym,  Khalille and Avery.  Her siblings; Velmah, Gideon, Byron, Fitz, Larry, Glenroy in St Vincent. Margaret in Trinidad; Julian, Clive, Albert, Wayne, Gail, Earl, Victor and Desiree in the US; Pamela in Canada. 61 nieces and nephews.  Her church family. Many other relatives and friends including the Lewis, Lawrence, Dennie, Richards, Providence, Garraway and Debique families.

She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
