Obituary of Myrtella Angella Hodge

Myrtella was a mother, grandmother, sister, aunty and best friend to many. She was born in Cairn Curran, Westmoreland, Jamaica. Myrtella immigrated in 1971, joining her siblings in Winnipeg. She joined the Afro-Caribbean Association of Manitoba (ACAM), the only Black organization at that time, where immigrants from Jamaica and the Caribbean could come together, hear the dialects of their country and feel at home. She was a member of the ACAM dance group and choir as well.

A graduate of Red River College, Myrtella got her very first full-time job as a lab technician with Kodak photo lab. She then moved on to work with Canadian Diabetes Association in 1980 (Winnipeg), transferring in 1988 to the Toronto office where she continued her career with CDA until her retirement in 2020.

Myrtella loved to travel; cruises were her most favourite and she also loved gardening. Every year, she would look forward to spring so she could get in the garden do some landscaping and plant her flowers. When summer finally arrived, she would spend her mornings on her deck having her coffee and admiring her flowers and sharing her gardening success on Facebook.

Myrtella’s true love and passion was her family, especially her son Shawn, grand-daughter Journee, grand-son Jasiah, and her cat Ashley. She is survived by her siblings Connie Cuff, Lois Patterson, Ben Jones and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

We ask that in memory of Myrtella, you consider a donation the Canadian Diabetes Association or Jamaican Canadian Association.
