Obituary of Joycelyn Evadney Callender

Born January 25, 1950, in Crickhill, St. James, Barbados to the late William Chandler and Itinia Carter Greenidge.

A graduate of Alexandra Secondary in St. Peter, she emigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1967 to further her education and become a nurse. She started her nursing career at the Montreal General and then earned her full nursing credential in 1975 from Ryerson University in Toronto. She continued her nursing career in Toronto and for the past 10 years worked up north in Moosonee, Ontario at a community health clinic.

In 1976 she got married to Claude Callender and had three children. She was determined in the advancement and education of herself, her children and grandchildren and her community. Joycelyn was very outgoing, friendly and loving to her friends and very helpful to lend an ear to and help anyone in need. A lifelong friend to many from Barbados, Parkdale Collegiate in Toronto, Mount Sinai Hospital and Toronto General Hospital.

On Thursday March 3, 2022, at the Mississauga Hospital, Joycelyn transitioned and took her place alongside her ancestors, including her late sisters Alicia Brown and Clovette Chandler.

Joycelyn is survived by her children Stacey, Darryl and Wynton and her two grandchildren Alta (Tutu) and Carter Callender. Her uncle Michael Goodridge and aunt Eunice Forde. Her sisters Jesmaine Bowling, Monica Agard, Karen Chandler and her brother Jeffery Chandler. Aunt to Jimmy Gittens, Kofi Callender, Gail and Duane Douglas, Patryce Bowling, Ryan Agard, Chantelle, Patrice and Gabriella Chandler. As well as Aunt and Godmother to many others in England and Canada.

She will be remembered by the Callender, Douglas, Chandler, Crichlow, Noble, Simmons, Taylor, Goh families and many friends.

The visitation will be held on March 24th, 2022 from 4 to 8 pm at New Haven FC, 7025 Legion Rd. (at Derry) Mississauga, Ontario. The celebration of her life will be held on March 25th, 2022 at 10 am at New Haven FC, followed by burial at St. John’s Dixie Cemetery at 737 Dundas Street East, Mississauga.
