Obituary of Eglon Truman Wilson
On Sunday, February 5, 2023, Eglon Wilson, a loving husband, father,
brother, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away at the age of 90
as a result of his dementia. He was born on January 15, 1933, to Patience
Hutchinson and John Wilson in Ashton Village on Union Island, West
Indies. Migrating to Grenada, he met the love of his life , Gwennie
DeCoteau in 1960 and they were married in 1961.
Eglon received his Bachelor of Education Degree from York University and
later, his Masters Degree of Education from the University of Toronto in
June of 1979. As an educator, he touched the lives of many students over
his 30 plus years. Working as a school teacher and principal in Grenada,
Trinidad and Tobago, and finally in Canada, teaching was his passion. Wellrespected
and loved by his students, he believed that every child
deserved to have the best possible opportunity to learn. Despite the
challenges he faced in the classroom, he demonstrated a Christ-like
attitude for his students and encouraged them to always do their best,
recognizing the potential in each child. As a result of his dedication and
zeal for his students, he was voted “Teacher of the Year” while working for
the Etobicoke Board of Education. He retired to Grenada with his dear
wife, Gwennie, in the year 2000.
Eglon was a spiritual leader at home and in his church. He ensured that his
children had a good Christian foundation from the time they were born.
Daily family worship at 6 a.m. as well as involvement in church activities
was an integral part of family life. At the Malton S.D.A. church he served as
a First Elder, Sabbath School teacher and choir member for many years
and was a formidable leader of the church. His love for God was seen
through Bible studies with new members, counselling, mentorship and
community work. Although he retired from his vocation, his passion for
service continued at both the Riversalee and Telescope S.D.A. churches in
Grenada.
Eglon’s caring and compassionate character was seen in his relationships
with his children, grandchildren, siblings, nieces and nephews. Family was
of the utmost importance to him and he always encouraged them to
maintain connections that would pass on from one generation to the next.
Eglon was best known for his quiet and humble demeanor. Missing Eglon
are: his wife Gwennie of 61 years; his five children Jennifer, Rose, Joan,
Eddie (Sharon), and Fran (Mark); grandchildren Devon (Shannon), Jamal
(Laney), D’Nyeal (Kamika), Janai, Sahrina and Maya; greatgrandchildren
Chase, Issac, Amari, Trinity, Jehan-Marie, and Jamal Jr.;
siblings Raphael (Jean), Esther (St. Clair), Silma; and, a host of nieces and
nephews.
We find comfort and peace in the knowledge that Eglon is resting in Jesus
and will next see our loving Saviour, when He returns. Asleep in Jesus
until we meet again.
“…the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
